Atlanta boasts forty five area colleges. The statistic begs the question; “How can so many colleges maintain enrollment without producing a main workforce that is overqualified and who feel underutilized?”

The truth is that Atlanta is a vast and varied city with a population of close to four million people that can support this large number of colleges. International industry that calls Atlanta home varies from Coca-Cola to Turner Broadcasting to Delta Airlines; and national industry like Home Depot and SunTrust add to that wealth of industry. The city of Atlanta also provides a terrific atmosphere for small business by offering start-up support networks and encouraging foot traffic in its separate boroughs.

Colleges range in focus across the spectrum and they offer more than four hundred fields of study, including engineering, health professions, architecture, business, communications, education, visual/performing arts, English language/literature, biological/life sciences, computer/information sciences, physical sciences, math, and theological studies. The programs serve more than 196,000 students at any given time, translating into the fact that 34.9 percent of adults 25 years and older in Atlanta have completed college.

Metro Atlanta’s two largest universities are Georgia State University (GSU) and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech); they are both recognized as national leaders in their programs.

Notably, the Atlanta University Center, which includes the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman and Clark Atlanta University, is the largest association of private African-American colleges in the nation. Its schools win national honors and enroll more than 13,000 students each year.

Top private schools in the area include Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Mercer University and Oglethorpe University. Kennesaw State University has received top honors for its first year university experience. Several smaller colleges like Floyd work at providing opportunities for the masses of people who need convenience and accessibility in order to make a college degree a possibility.
